So I know everyone is familiar with goals, and that setting and accomplishing them is good.

But more often than not we are experts at setting goals, and are lacking when it comes to accomplishing them.

The challenge is most people view the goal setting and accomplishing process to simplistically.

You write down hat thing you want to achieve, you make sure and look at it every day and many days you take steps to achieve it, but sooner or later it’s easy to forget about it, or get discouraged, or confused as to what steps to take next to accomplish it.

Today I’m going to teach you a fool proof system for making sure you set the right goals, and accomplish them every time.

The System

There are three elements to correct goal setting and these can be used achieve goals in your personal life and your business. The three elements are:

  1. Objectives
  2. Goals
  3. Tasks

Objectives

So for the sake of teaching, let’s start with one of the most common of resolutions: to get in shape.

First, you start with your objective. Objectives are clear statements of intent that are broader in scope than a goal. They focus on end results and are used to define long-term desires.

So, if you want to get in shape or lose weight, a great objective might be “to have a rocking beach body”

Goals

So now that you have set your objective, this is where we set the goals need to accomplish that objective, and with goals you get more specific.

You have probably heard of setting SMART goals before, but in case you haven’t, here is the acronym:

Specific

Measurable

Attainable

Relevant

Time-related

So, to accomplish the broader objective of having a rockin’ beach body you are going to have to do three things:

  1. Loose weight
  2. Build muscle
  3. Eat right

So let’s turn those into goals:

  • Goal 1: Lose 10 pounds of fat by July 1.
  • Goal 2: Gain 5 pound of muscle by July 1
  • Goal 3: Eat healthy balanced meals containing carbs, proteins, and fats, three meals a day, six days a week, with one cheat day.

So you can see all of these goals accomplish the SMART goal acronym.

They are all specific, measurable, attainable, relevant to your ultimate objective, and time-related.

Tasks

Now you bring in the tasks needed to accomplish those goals.

This is where you break your goals down into actionable steps that you can follow to actually achieve your goals, and eventually achieve your objective.

I won’t go through steps for every goal, but let’s go with your first goal: “lose 10 pounds of fat by July 1”

To break that down into actionable steps we might set some tasks that look like this:

  • Task 1: Find a gym you like, and become a member.
  • Task 2: Find a weight loss plan, or hire a physical trainer (make sure whatever plan you go with has you losing 10 pounds by July 1st!)
  • Task 2: buy some awesome gym clothes so you at least you’re trendy walking into the gym.
  • Task 3: Hit the gym with your focus being on weight loss EVERY Monday, Wednesday, and Friday evening. NO excuses.

Set as many tasks as necessary to accomplish the goal…and that’s the gist of it!

One more way to illustrate this concept is thinking of a football team…

Tasks are like football plays called by the quarterback. A play when performed correctly, will move the team up the field resulting in a touchdown, which is a major goal toward the objective of winning the game.

Tasks = plays, goals = touchdowns, and accomplishing the objective = winning the game.

So next time you set out to accomplish something, go through this three-step process of setting your objectives, goals, and tasks. At that point, the map to your destination is completely laid out. All that’s left is for you to keep taking the next step.
